Resveratrol:
Works to keep you healthy by working on the power plant in your cells, otherwise known as the mitochondria. We also know from studies that Resveratrol is beneficial to multiple systems to help maintain your overall health while you age. Many studies show that resveratrol helps support health to many parts of the body, helping maintain the energy and vitality of normal health for a longer period of time.

Astral Fruit:
Believed to act specifically on the chromosomes within cells, which contain a person's DNA. The active ingredient in Astral Fruit is known to activate the enzyme telomerase. We believe telomerase will help keep chromosomes and DNA in a healthy state, can help repair some of the damage done by aging, and may help increase the amount of times your cells can normally divide*.

In short, Resveratrol works on overall health of multiple systems, while Astral Fruit works specifically on DNA repair, protection, and cell division*.

What is Telomerase?
Telomerase happens naturally in a person when the immune system prepares to fight off sickness. The immune system activates telomerase when it is in need of creating new cells to combat sickness. It is the method used by your body to lengthen telomere areas in a cell to allow more cell divisions to happen.

We believe Astral Fruit can help you keep your chromosomes healthy by activating telomerase naturally. Much like exercise keeps your bones and muscles strong, we believe telomerase can help support your DNA and the overall cell's health*.

Getting down to specifics:

Telomerase is an enzyme that adds specific DNA sequence repeats ("TTAGGG" in all vertebrates) to the end of DNA strands. These strands are found at the ends of chromosomes within cells. Each individual region where these DNA sequence is held is called a telomere. The telomeres contain condensed DNA material, giving stability to the chromosomes and allowing the cell to divide. Each telomere is like the hard plastic end of a shoelace, it keeps the shoe lace from coming undone over time. Telomeres on the other hand exist to protect the end of the chromosome from destruction as well as provides DNA information to a new cell when the cell divides. Each cell in a division would get a complete copy of DNA information from the Telomere. It is because of this, that the Telomere shrinks and some protection is lost.

As a cell divides during the normal course of aging, these telomeres shrink when a new cell is created by division. At one point after about 52 divisions, the telomere (because of shrinking) cannot protect the chromosome ends, which become unstable and the original cell dies and is destroyed. Any new cells will become unstable because of incomplete DNA, and are destroyed as well.

Animal studies suggest that this is responsible for aging on the cellular level and affects lifespan*.

Astral Fruit was created to take advantage of a natural Telomerase activator, and is simply the only dietary supplement of it's kind. We believe others may follow our lead to provide you this kind of cellular support in the future.

Purity:
Astral Fruit's active ingredient called Astragaloside IV has been tested on animals for bioavailability and absorption. In tests, high purity Astragaloside IV absorption was low in an aqueous solution, but when a lower purity form of Astragaloside IV was introduced as part of Astragalus (Radix Astragali), the absorption was significantly higher[1]. The study suggests that using a high purity Astragaloside IV without the natural astragalus (Radix Astragali) phytonutrients would not be absorbed or work very well because of it's very low absorption.

Because of this study, we have introduced Astral Fruit's active ingredient Astragaloside IV as part of Astragalus (Radix Astragali) to maintain a higher absorption. We considered a high purity Astragaloside IV with rice powder fillers, but declined as the study suggests it would have a lower absorption, and we did not want to use rice powder fillers in our vegetarian capsules. The new May 2009 product contains 100mg per capsule.

If you can't absorb the product well, you may not get the results you want. Again, this is not an opinion, it comes from a study that we had to consider when looking at methods to produce this product.

Chitosan:
In addition, for our new formulation, we have added 5mg of Chitosan which has been shown to increase the absorption of Astragaloside IV in CACO-2 cells found in your system[2].

Recommended Dosage:
1 capsule a day. For best results, take at least 3 hours after Resveratrol or any of the natural Telomerase inhibitors below:
  • Curcumin
  • Resveratrol
  • Quercetin
  • Melatonin
  • Green tea
  • Alliicin (garlic)
  • Silymarin
You may also consider cycling between Resveratrol and Astral Fruit, on a daily or weekly basis.

Telomere Testing:
We believe current pricing for Telomere testing have come down from a year ago. While some companies charge $25000 a year for tests that include telomere testing, we understand that for the average person, it's simply not possible to afford this kind of "out of pocket" expense.

In the future we may suggest a telomere length test as shown below, and are affordable to take once or twice a year. We believe it will help you gauge this interesting new aging development on your own terms. Here is more information regarding this testing if you are interested in it today.

For now we will provide one of the only known, natural supplements in the world, that can help support overall chromosome health, help battle and repair DNA damage, and support healthy and continued cell division.

Does It Work ?
Astral Fruit is one of 3 supplements we are working on for longevity. Astral Fruit is specifically aimed at the Telomerase gene. Resveratrol is aimed at the P53 gene along with many other benefits. A third supplement that we have not yet made available is aimed at the P16 gene. We believe maintaining these 3 genes in a healthy state will allow a person to naturally live healthier for a longer period of time.

We have looked through the literature, and there have only been small studies regarding Telomerase activators. There are no clinical studies, as it may take multiple years to produce a longevity study. The only thing we can do is measure our current telomere length every 6 months to see if it slows, stops or reverses telomere shortening.

For your convenience and mine, I will be posting my personal telomere measurements each 6 months, to compare how this supplement is working for myself. Update 04/01/2009:
My second set of Telomere measurements came back with no statistical difference from my first test. At this time I am making the decision to increase the amount in our Astral Fruit formula as well as in my personal regimen for my particular weight. I will also start cycling Resveratrol for the next 6 months to make sure there is no telomerase inhibition or effect. Some folks may consider that no change in my telomere length is great, since my telomeres may not be shortening. However I will be testing myself again in six months as my goal is to not merely slow or stop telomere shortening, but to see if Astral Fruit can increase my telomere length, and if this can be measured and verified. - Anthony Loera [President - RevGenetics.]
